– Emily of Emerald Hill –
one of the most popular productions in Singapore’s theatre history,
is coming to a neighbourhood near you! <3
Instead of performing at the usual theatres located in the Central/Town district, Desert Wine (a Singapore based media business) aims to present the famous and iconic play Emily of Emerald Hill under their new series called “Comfort Theatre: The Off Central Performances” where more heartlanders can enjoy their local plays in the comfort of their own residential area.
With so much art events happening around us, the local arts scene has grown so much over the years! Singapore’s Arts Scene has never been more alive and right now, it is already developing a thriving theatre scene. Even international broadway shows like Wicked and Les Miserables have already make way to our shores. However, most of the time, our Arts scene is often cocooned within the confines of Orchard Road/Central Business District in Singapore, which may give the impression of an exclusive community despite being centrally located.
Desert Wine aims to break away from this stigma of theatre by moving away from the usual theatres in the Central/Town district. They hope to bring awareness of the Arts and local talents TO the People by coming up with “Comfort Theatre: The Off Central Performances” series. This move hopes to allow more heartlanders to be able to have the great opportunity to reconnect with the arts and enjoy local plays at the comfort of their own residential enclaves without the need for a full fledged expensive theatre setting.
As quoted by Desert Wine:
Comfort Theatre
In this ‘Comfort Theatre: The Off Central Performances’ series, there will not be any flashy sets or expensive rigging/lighting. Instead, this Series will strip theatre to its core basics – to where the focus will be on the actor and the script.Hence just as with comfort food, our Comfort Theatre is theatre made simple, basic, and with no frills. And just as with comfort food, Comfort Theatre will indeed still be fulfilling, nourishing, and enjoyable.
In essence, one need not have expensive staging to present good stories and good acting.
Desert Wine is proud to announce their upcoming play “Emily of Emerald Hill”, which was written by Stella Koh and directed by Sharmila Melissa Yogalingam. It will be the opening play of a roving, no-frills, stripped-down Series that will travel to various sites across the island from June 4th to July 2016.
Emily of Emerald Hill
We’re starting this Series off with Emily of Emerald Hill which tells the tale of a charming Peranakan woman, Emily Gan, who evolves from a frightened young bride to a strong-willed matriarch. And through her devious manoeuvring, her son’s mysterious suicide and her husband’s infidelity – Emily presents her life to the audience as one that is filled with love and happiness, and also with regrets and bitter lessons
