Previously I blogged about Emily of the Emerald Hill, written by Stella Koh and is one of the most popular Singapore production in Singapore’s theatre history.
It was a pleasure to be invited by the director, Shamila, to watch the play at Bukit Panjang CC. My first thought was that it will be interesting to see how it will be like to watch the monoplay in a simple, basic and no frill environment. It was a first for me to watch a monoplay which involves only one character as I usually watch musical plays which involves many characters in a full fledged theatre settings. And to my surprise, I enjoyed the play tremendously!
Laura Kee who played Emily of Emerald Hill has done a wonderful job in capturing my attention throughout the whole play. Despite having just a few stage props (chair and a table with a phone), she was able to act out the imaginary scenes with the imaginary characters as she displayed her emotions which can make me understand what was going on in the story plot. It is no wonder that everyone actually stay on for Act 2 because for me, I clearly want to know what happen next after Act 1. Sitting there, it makes me forget that I am sitting in the hall of the community centre and letting Emily (acted by Laura) mesmerized me with her life story at Emerald Hill.
I managed to meet the lovely people, Shamila and Laura, after the play performance and had a short conversation with them. Thanks Shamila for extending the invitation to my fiancé and I 🙂
I also had an interview with Laura, so thanks Laura for taking the time to answer my questions!
